The crew of Rowdy, overall winner, were the stars of the closing ceremony, where Club de Mar-Mallorca president Borja de la Rosa thanked the owners for their efforts to preserve maritime heritage
Owner Donna Dyer and her crew aboard Rowdy (1916) were the protagonists of the prize-giving ceremony for the 31st edition of the Illes Balears Clàssics Regatta, which concluded today at Club de Mar-Mallorca.
The Nathanael Herreshoff-designed yacht successfully defended the title it had won in the previous two editions by taking victory in the Gaff Era class. She was also awarded the Club de Mar-Mallorca Trophy as the overall winner.
The other regatta winners were Hallowe’en (1926), in the Big Boats class; Argyll (1948), in the Bermudian Era class; Clarionet (1966), in the Classics class; and Barlovento-Senda Azul (1975), in the Spirit of Tradition class.
The prize-giving ceremony brought the 31st Illes Balears Clàssics Regatta to a close. Organised by Club de Mar-Mallorca, the event brought together around thirty classic and vintage yachts over four days.
Meanwhile, Bakea received the Illes Balears Clàssics Women’s Trophy for being the participating yacht with the highest percentage of female crew members on board.
The yachts Eilean, Hallowe’en and Bon Temps were also presented with the “Legends of the Sea” trophy, recognising them as the finest representatives of the spirit of classic sailing.
The ceremony was attended by the deputy director of the Balearic Sports Foundation of the Balearic Government, Antoni Burguera; Marinepool co-founder and CEO, Robert Stark; Club de Mar-Mallorca president, Borja de la Rosa; the club’s general manager, José Luis Arrom; vice-presidents José Cuart and Victor Alonso-Cuevillas; commodore Manuel Nadal de Uhler; and representatives of the event’s sponsoring and collaborating companies.
In his closing speech, Club de Mar-Mallorca president Borja de la Rosa congratulated the winning teams and thanked all the participating crews for their presence, noting that “the mere fact of keeping classic yachts sailing is already an extraordinary achievement”.
The Club de Mar-Mallorca president made special mention of Allianz for its support over five consecutive years and of Marinepool, with whom “we had the pleasure of organising the Marinepool Trophy on Wednesday, 12 August, a competition that did not count towards the Illes Balears Clàssics Regatta but served as a training race for the participating yachts.”
