In January 2025, it will be 37 years – almost four decades – since María José Mancilla, from the Port Office Department, began working at Club de Mar-Mallorca. She is currently the longest-serving employee at the club. As Club de Mar-Mallorca embarks on a new chapter, we talked with María José about her early days at the company, her professional growth, and the evolution of the club as an organization.
How did you get started?
I joined the club thanks to the then Head of Administration, Mr D. Antonio Arrom, who invited me to join his team and be part of the project. I was thrilled to accept because of the excellent working conditions offered.
I started in the Offices/Administration department, where I still work today, although now I’m more focused on the Port Office area. I remember feeling quite nervous on my first day. Back then, I was the only woman in the department—quite a contrast to today, where women play a much more prominent role. Everything was new to me, but I was excited to begin my journey.
What are your current responsibilities?
I mainly handle reservations to ensure everything is well organized, assist customers, manage invoicing, and operate the radio station. I’m still in the port office, but my tasks are now more clearly defined.
What was the club like when you started, and how has it grown?
Almost all processes were done manually. I remember we used files with cards for each boat, where we manually logged entries and departures. We even had a framed paper map of the marina to track occupancy. It was all so manual!
Over time, we’ve made significant progress. Now, our systems are modernized, making everything easier and more efficient.
How do you feel about your work at Club de Mar-Mallorca?
It has been a positive experience. Over the years, I’ve been able to grow professionally, adapt to changes, and witness the evolution of my role. I truly feel fortunate to be part of this “family” at Club de Mar-Mallorca.
Are you excited about the inauguration of the new facilities?
Absolutely! I’m really looking forward to seeing how new Club de Mar-Mallorca turns out. It will be very special to be part of this new chapter and watch the project evolve.
Do you recall any memorable anecdotes from these nearly four decades?
Once, I had to go to the marina to collect a payment on a massive 45-meter yacht. I was perplexed because they had a pirate flag flying—a sight you definitely don’t see every day. In fact, I haven’t seen anything like it since! (laughs). Of course, there have been countless stories—but many of them can´t be shared!
