Club de Mar Mallorca will name the Balearic sea kayaking champion. The club will organise the Balearic Sea Kayaking Championship tomorrow, Saturday the 27th of May, in collaboration with the Balearic Canoeing Federation.
More than 180 paddlers from 14 clubs from Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza will participate in the competition, which will determine the regional title in different categories. Due to renovation works on the Paseo Marítimo, the competition has been relocated at the last minute to Costa d’en Blanes beach.
All the races will take place on Saturday morning. The children´s category will cover a three thousand-meter course with a round trip from the beach to Punta Negra. The other categories will have to complete a distance of eight kilometres, starting from the beach of Costa den Blanes, sailing southwest towards the islet of Na Porrassa and returning to the starting point, where the finish line will be located.
The top sea kayaking specialists in the Balearic Islands will compete for the highest spot on the podium. The Club de Mar team will also strive to achieve a good performance. Among its members are the current world champion and runner-up in the Veteran´s category, Donatella Monteleone and Elena García Horrach.
The duels in the different categories will also be interesting, involving paddlers with national titles such as the current Spanish Junior champion, Pep Cifre (CV Port d’Andratx) who will compete in the U23 category with rivals like Lluc Matas (RCN Palma).
In the Senior Category, Borja Garcia and James Fitzsimmons (RCN Palma) both with an enviable national and international track record, are among the favourites. Alicia Heredia, Esther Corral, from RCN Palma, and Gisele Corte, Elena Reolid together with María del Mar Ramón, from Club de Mar, are some of the candidates for the title in the women’s competition.
