The athlete becomes Club de Mar´s first world champion
Donatella Monteleone, from the Club de Mar Mallorca, became the World Sea Kayaking Champion yesterday in the category of 60-64 year-olds at the World Championships held in Viana do Castelo, Portugal. Monteleone thus becomes the first world champion from Club de Mar’s sports department, a testimony to the entity’s commitment to the promotion of the sport.
This year’s event was hosted in the waters of the Atlantic. A 19.5 km race was used to decide who are the best paddlers in the world in the discipline of canoeing.
Donatella Monteleone was the best in the 60-64 years old category after completing the course in 2 hours, 2 minutes and 55 seconds. The runner-up in the same category came also from Club de Mar; Elena García Horrach stopped the clock in 2 hours, 19 minutes and 13 seconds.
Paddlers from Club de Mar stood out also in the men’s Masters competition, where Manuel López-Brea and Carlos Díaz came close to the medals with a fifth and a sixth place in the category of 65-69 year-olds .
Eight paddlers from Club de Mar took part in the Portugal event, where athletes also from the RCN Palma and the Club de Vela Port d’Andratx participated. Also Elena Reolid shone in Portugal after finishing fifteenth in the under 23 category. The Club de Mar athlete and instructor, Gisele Corte, was 21st in the general classification, reserved for top level athletes.
