Donatella Monteleone, Sea Kayaking World Champion in Portugal

The athlete becomes the first world champion of the Club de Mar Mallorca’s sport sections

Donatella Monteleone, from the Club de Mar Mallorca, yesterday became World Sea Kayaking Champion in the 60-64 years old category at the World Championships held in Viana do Castelo, Portugal. Monteleone thus becomes the first world champion of the Club de Mar’s sports sections, as a result of the entity’s commitment to the promotion of the sport.

The Atlantic waters have hosted this year’s event that decided who are the best paddlers in the world in this discipline of canoeing. A 19.5 km race was used to decide the champions.

Donatella Monteleone was the best in the 60-64 years old category after completing the course with a time of 2 hours, 2 minutes and 55 seconds. The runner-up in the same category was also for the Club de Mar, thanks to Elena García Horrach, who stopped the clock in 2 hours, 19 minutes and 13 seconds.

The Club de Mar paddlers also stood out in the men’s Masters competition, where Manuel López-Brea and Carlos Díaz came close to the medals with a fifth and a sixth place in the 65-69 category.

Eight paddlers from the Club de Mar took part in the Portugal event, which also included athletes from the RCN Palma and the Club de Vela Port d’Andratx. Elena Reolid also shone in Portugal after finishing fifteenth in the under 23 category. The sportswoman and instructor of the Club de Mar, Gisele Corte, was 21st in the absolute category, reserved for top level sportswomen.
