The Illes Balears Clàssics will have three days of racing again this year

The Club de Mar’s classic boat regatta will be held between the 11th and 14th of August.

The  Regatta Illes Balears Clàssics will once again turn the Bay of Palma into a beautiful spectacle of classic boats charging at full sail during the month of August. The event, organised by  Club de Mar Mallorca, returns this year to its usual format with three days of racing between the 11th and 14th of August, after the competition was reduced to two days in 2021 due to health restrictions. This is the edition of the return to normality and the event calendar also recovers its usual programme of social events after two years of limitations.

The pace of registrations suggests that, at the very least, the participation figures of previous editions will be repeated, with around twenty boats competing. This year’s Illes Balears Clàssics has already confirmed the participation of boats taking part in the event for the first time, such as the Portuguese Sea Lion, a sailboat built in 1952 at the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard in Bremen (Germany), the Spanish Salina Tres and the British Rubicón. Nor will the regatta be missed by old friends such as Fjord or Cippino, which already have the trophies in their  cabinets for previous victories in the Club de Mar classic regatta.

The Commodore of Club de Mar, Manuel Nadal, highlights the entity’s commitment to maritime heritage: “We have a great interest in helping to conserve and promote this type of sailing. These are historic boats, which cost a lot to maintain, and we believe that regattas like the Illes Balears Clàssics are key to helping to diffuse this work and that the general public should also have an opportunity to get to know and enjoy them”.

The first day of the regatta, which this year celebrates its 27th edition, will be dedicated to celebrate the welcome party for the participating crews and to complete the preliminary registration and measurement procedures. The racing will take place on the 12th, 13th and 14th. It will give us an opportunity to contemplate these sailing jewels  plowing the seas in all their splendour.  On the 14th, this year’s Illes Balears Clàssics will bow out with a prizegiving ceremony in which the best boats of this edition will be awarded. For the first time, the regatta headquarters will be concentrated on quay 7 of Club de Mar. There, the boats will moor, the regatta office will be located and all the social events will take place in what will be the new nerve centre of the Illes Balears Clàssics.

Every day of the regatta there will be coastal sails around the Bay of Palma, which makes it easy easy to enjoy this  international cavalcade of historic maritime heritage from the coast. The organisers have divided the competition into four classes: Vintage, Classics, EDT/RI Classics and Big Boats, large boats over 23 metres in length. In addition, a special section, called Presence, has been created for vintage and classic boats over 50 years old, which will be present at the club to enjoy the event, without taking part in the races. All the information about the event is available on the website www.velaclasicamallorca.com.

The Illes Balears Clàssics Regatta is part of the Mare Nostrum Classics Trophy – Spanish Classic Sailing Circuit, which this year consists of five races for the first time, following the addition of the Vela Clásica Costa Brava regatta, organised by the Club Náutico Estartit, in Girona.
